The Historic
Sacramento City Cemetery was established in 1849 with a donation
of 10 acres from Captain John A. Sutter. Cemetery staff members
conduct educational programs and interpretive tours throughout the
year serving hundreds of visitors of all ages. Many prominent Americans
are buried in the cemetery, including the founder of the City of
Sacramento, John A. Sutter, Jr., whose father built Sutter's Fort;
William Stephen Hamilton, son of the first U.S. Secretary of the
Treasury, Alexander Hamilton; Newton Booth, California's 11th Governor;
Margaret Crocker and Mark Hopkins, one of the builders of the transcontinental
railroad.
